Tattoo Aftercare FAQs
How long does a tattoo take to heal?
Surface healing usually takes 2–3 weeks. Full healing under the skin can take up to 6 weeks.
When can I go swimming after a tattoo?
Avoid swimming, baths, hot tubs, lakes, rivers, or saunas for at least 3 weeks. Showers only.
What if my tattoo scabs or flakes?
Light scabbing and peeling are normal. Do not pick — let it fall away naturally.
Should I re-bandage my tattoo?
No. Once the original bandage is removed, do not re-bandage. Your tattoo needs air to heal.
Can I use scented soap or lotion on my tattoo?
No. Only use unscented soap and moisturizer as recommended. Scented products can irritate and damage your tattoo.
What if my tattoo feels itchy while healing?
Mild itching is normal during healing. Do not scratch — apply unscented moisturizer to soothe the skin.
What do I do if my tattoo is healing differently than described?
Reach out to your artist directly as soon as possible. Your artist is the only one qualified to give you advice on how to heal your tattoo.
Is it normal for my tattoo to leak fluid after getting it?
Yes. It’s normal for a new tattoo to seep ink, ointment, or blood during the first few hours.
How should I wash my new tattoo?
Wash your hands first, then gently wash the tattoo with warm water and mild unscented soap using only your hands. Do not use washcloths or anything abrasive. Pat dry with a clean towel.
When should I start applying ointment or lotion?
Let your tattoo dry 12–24 hours after the first wash before applying ointment. Use a very thin layer; too much can make scabs fall off too early, while too little can cause dryness and cracking.
What are the signs of a tattoo infection?
Contact your artist immediately if you notice excess swelling or redness after the first few days, green or yellow discharge, persistent pain, splitting, or bleeding in a tattoo that is more than five days old.
Seek urgent care if you see streaks radiating from the tattoo.
When can I go in the sun after getting a tattoo?
Avoid tanning and sunbathing while your tattoo heals. Once fully healed, always protect your tattoo with SPF 30 or higher sunscreen to keep it vibrant.
Do you offer free touch-ups?
Yes. Touch-ups are available within the first 3 months if needed. Fees may apply if you wait longer. Ask your artist for details.
